How would cramming effect encoding?

You have two friends who have been struggling with exams in their classes. They can’t figure out what they are doing wrong, so they approach you for advice. In talking with your friends, you learn:

  1. Both of them are studying in one big cram session the evening before the exam.  They’re just not motivated to put in more time.
  2. They primarily study by just rereading notes and the chapters.
  3. One of your friends is only 17 and she checks her phone about every 2 minutes for text messages or social media updates.
  4. Your other friend is returning to college after some time away and is 65 years old.  She finds it easy to recognize some information when asked a fill-in-the-blank question, but it is much harder if she has to define a vocabulary word or answer an essay.

The good news is that you are enrolled in a psychology class that can help both your friends improve their study habits and results on the exam.

As you prepare to help your friends, here are some specific topics to address.

  1. From Chapter 1, what part of the brain is responsible for remembering the important information that will be on the exam?  Describe that part of the brain and its purpose.
  2. As covered in Chapter 4, psychologists have determined that age can effect cognitive development and memory.
  3. For your friend who is 17, how could you use what you have learned about moral development to explain why she may be checking her phone every 2 minutes for text messages and social media updates.   How could she expand her attention?
  4. For your friend is age 65, and having a hard time with vocabulary, explain what may be happening that prevents her from doing well on this type of activity.  How could she improve?
  5.  In chapter 6, we learn about operant conditioning.  Describe operant conditioning in your own words.  Thinking of operant conditioning, how could you help your friend use rewards as motivation to study more often?
  6.  Using what we have learned in chapter 7, explain why your memory may not retain all the information learned in the cram session the night before the big exam.
  7. How would cramming effect encoding?
  8. How would cramming effect retrieval?
  9. What is one technique that each friend could use to help improve memory and prepare for the exam?
  10. It’s the night before the big exam.  You check on your friends and your younger friend is not doing well.  It turns out that things have turned out even worse.  Her boyfriend broke up with her, stole money from her bank account, and her grandmother passed away the week before.  You notice on her Facebook page that she posed, “Where can I find some rope?!?”
  11. In chapter 5, you learn about suicide and what to do.  Based on that, what steps can you take to help your friend?  Be sure to include any resources that you could call to get advice.

Describe at least three different platforms you could use, along with why you would use it, and how you would use it for each of the three.

Design a personal plan to use social media to benefit the student both personally and professionally as well as minimize online mistakes and their impact.

Instructions

Regardless of the career that you pursue or are currently pursuing, it is likely that the action of securing the resource of friends and professional acquaintances will be as valuable as any other action you could take.

Part 1:

First, take some time to reflect on your career and/or future career. If this includes more than one career path, then focus on the one that you are most concerned with in the long term. This might include working in a specific field, starting a business, or any other pursuit you are currently working on or plan to work on in the future. The choice behind the pursuit you will focus on is a personal choice.

Write two pages on why this particular career and/or pursuit is your choice. Reflecting on the why behind your wish to achieve a goal will help to make it feel more tangible to you. This exercise of reflection should serve to remind you of your motivation and will be a good thing to refer back to if your motivation ever gets low. The “why” behind a pursuit is oftentimes more important than the “how” of a pursuit. If you have a strong enough “why,” you will find the “how.”

Part 2:

For the second part of this assignment, make a list of the types of people that could help you in your career and why those people would be good contacts to have. This list should be general in nature, meaning you should list professions or names of positions within companies rather than specific names.

You should list general fields or positions like accountants, attorneys, marketing managers, CEOs, etc., rather than any specific names. Be sure to list at least five professions or types of people.

Part 3:

Next, consider which social media platforms you could use to make personal contacts that could help you in your pursuit along with why and how you could use each. Ensure that the platform and your use of it line up with the specifics behind your chosen future goal.

Describe at least three different platforms you could use, along with why you would use it, and how you would use it for each of the three.

  • Platform #
    • Why?
    • How?

Part 4:

Finally, put all of this together and take action. The next part of this assignment is where you can make a big difference in your grade as well as in your real life pursuit of a goal!

Reach out through the avenue of social media and make contact with three people that you do not currently know. Describe who you contacted and why (you do not need to give their specific name). Explain how you went about contacting them. Contacting someone that works in the same field as you or the same field you intend to work in should be relatively easy as long as you take a professional approach. Speculate over how this new contact might be helpful to you in the future. If you are not currently using social media, then find someone that you know that has used social media to make connections. Ask them to describe how social media has helped them to network and write about social media has helped them to network and make connections.

Discuss the changes you would make to your digital media presentation, including visual enhancements, if you wanted to disseminate it to a wider audience via social media sites.

Prior to completing your Discussion post or taking the Quiz, be sure to review the resources noted below. The resources from the Writing Center (WC) will focus on visual rhetoric, which is the use of visuals to convey a message, and on how to create advanced PowerPoint presentations.

Begin the Unit 10 Learning Activities.

After reviewing this unit’s Learning Activities, complete the Quiz. The next step will be to read the Discussion instructions and respond to the topics.

The inspiration for change can come from unexpected circumstances, yet the idea can then be catapulted into communities through digital media and social networking opportunities. With your digital media presentation, you have the opportunity to share your idea for change with your community or colleagues. With that opportunity in mind, respond to the question below:

  • Discuss the changes you would make to your digital media presentation, including visual enhancements, if you wanted to disseminate it to a wider audience via social media sites. Do you think your presentation could generate change, and do you foresee pursuing this argument for change in the future?

You can review a sample Discussion post by clicking on the following link: Unit 10 Sample Discussion Assignment.

You can review a sample PowerPoint presentation by clicking on the following link: Unit 10 Sample PowerPoint.

The Discussion post should be written in complete sentences using Standard American English. Before posting, proofread for grammar, spelling, and word-choice issues. Be sure to respond fully to every aspect of the Discussion.

When you refer to concepts from the unit Learning Activities, be sure to use a signal phrase like “According to . . .[name of reading].” If you are directly quoting the Learning Activities or another source, be sure to use quotation marks and cite the source using proper APA in-text citations and full references. The Writing Center has resources on APA citation formatting.

response to leon:

Hello Fellow Classmates and Professor!

Wow I cannot believe we have come to the conclusion of this class! It seems like we have started it yesterday and I was struggling to find a good theme to talk about throughout the whole class (which seemed impossible to do at first, by the way!), and now we are done! I have truly enjoyed working with all of you guys, and reading about your valuable feedback and comments, which helped me revise some of my work! Through this class I have learned some awesome new techniques when it comes to writing papers and also common (and not so common) issues that afflict today’s society.

Although I have done my very best to put together my first ever Power Point Presentation for Unit 9, I do not feel 100% confident about it, as I feel like there’s always space and opportunity for improvement. In particular, if I could change anything, it would be to add one more source and some more visuals to further prove my point. I always feel like there is never enough information when one is trying to make an impact and talk about something dear to one’s heart, and in the case of my presentation, I didn’t want to put too much information on it and risk losing the message.

I would love to pursue this theme outside the classroom and really make a substantial change in society, so that my child and all other bilingual children can have more resources available to them in the future and stress the importance of speaking different languages all the way up to the academic level. I know social media is the way to go to make sure the message is mainstreamed, but I don’t believe a power point presentation is the best way to push the message forward, so I would choose to make a video presentation rather than a power point in that case.

Thank you all again, and I wish all of you good luck for this all other classes to follow!

response to zachary: Some changes that I would make to my digital media presentation is maybe the integration of my voice in the slides.  It is difficult to actually relay something like a power point presentation without your voice because you want to avoid cluttering the presentation with text.  I was always taught to have minimal wording and actually explain to the audience rather than read from a slide.  I would also maybe include some video clips in the slide to help the audience visualize what I’m talking about

Is the issue of mothers using illicit drugs more of a legal or medical concern? Why do you think that?

Read Box 2.3: Should Women Who Use Drugs During Pregnancy Be Arrested and Jailed?on page 50 of your textbook. This box describes the results that occurred when pregnant women with a history of drug abuse faced potential arrest and incarceration. Additionally, read How States Handle Drug Use During Pregnancy. You will notice that only 3 states consider substance abuse during pregnancy to be a crime, and yet 18 states have laws that say drug use during pregnancy is child abuse, and in nearly every state women have been prosecuted for drug use during pregnancy. Answer the following questions in your post:

  • Critics contend that the criminal justice system should not be involved in what is considered a healthcare problem. What do you think?
  • Is the issue of mothers using illicit drugs more of a legal or medical concern? Why do you think that?
  • What if Florida was considering enacting a law that would make substance abuse during pregnancy a crime – what would be the pros and cons? Would you be for or against this law, and why?

What were the first few days after birth like? What kind of changes happened with you and the baby?

Interview someone who has recently (ideally within the last five years) had a baby. Alternatively, you could interview someone who works closely with babies, such as a daycare employee. Following is a list of some questions, but feel free to add in some of your own!

  • What were the first few days after birth like? What kind of changes happened with you and the baby?
  • What kind of reflexes did you notice in first few days, weeks, and months?
  • Tell me about some of the biggest physical milestones in your baby’s first year of life.
  • How did your baby’s emotional development change throughout the first year?
  • How did you cope and adjust with those emotional changes?
  • What were some of your baby’s biggest intellectual gains in the first few months?
  • How did your baby’s intellectual development progress throughout the first year?

Make sure to keep notes of your interview (transcript), which you will submit as an attachment to your assignment.

Now that you have your “data” in hand, you will write a 2-page paper that includes a summary of your findings and a reflection, where you will connect your data to the course material. Try to paint an accurate and vivid picture of what the infant’s first year was like. It’s a good idea to include direct quotes from the interviewee as appropriate. Connect and relate your findings to material from the unit readings. Be sure to cite your sources, both with in-text citations and a reference page at the end of your paper (in APA format).
