Unit 3 Assignment: Significant Differences at the Movies
Outcomes addressed in this activity:
Unit Outcomes:
Compare the roles of variables and observations in statistical analysis.
Summarize the concept of distribution.
Manipulate a dataset appropriately for use in univariate analysis.
Course Outcome:
IT527-3: Prepare a dataset for analysis by formatting, augmenting or reducing, and transforming variables and observations.
Purpose
This Assignment will offer you the chance to practice your skill at determining the statistical differences between groups in data. You will use the ANOVA techniques described in the text and in Seminar to examine the impact of certain variables in a data set on other variables.
Assignment Instructions
The Unit 3 Assignment will give you an opportunity to practice some of the analytics skills you learned in your Reading this week, and also to reflect on that learning. To fulfill the Unit 3 Assignment, complete the following steps:
Download the Movies comma separated values (CSV) file from Course Documents. Import this data set into a data frame called Movies in R Studio.
Place a screenshot of the data successfully loaded in R Studio into a Word document and label it appropriately.
Conduct a one-way ANOVA to determine if a movie’s MPAA Rating (e.g. G, PG, PG-13, etc.) has a statistically significant impact on the movie’s worldwide box office revenue. Place a screenshot of your ANOVA results in your Word document and explain whether or not there is any evidence that rating impacts worldwide revenue, using specific evidence from your ANOVA results.
Repeat your ANOVA to determine if your findings in Step 2 are consistent when only considering domestic box office revenue. Place a screenshot of your ANOVA results, and explain any differences between worldwide and domestic revenues.
Suppose you are a movie producer and you make a new movie that you want to distribute. You are approached by Warner Brothers® (WB) and Buena Vista® (BV). Both studios are interested in distributing your movie, and you want to pick the studio that is likely to earn you the most money. Conduct an ANOVA to determine if picking one studio or the other will make a difference in terms of your worldwide revenue. In your Word document, answer the following questions:
Does picking WB or BV make a difference in worldwide revenue, based on these studios’ revenues for the movies in the Assignment data set?
Which studio would you pick if it does make a difference? Why?
Suppose the Weinstein Company® (Wein.) approaches you and expresses interest in being your distributor. Based on the data, would you change your answer to 4b, above? Why or why not? (use options(max.print=1000000) in R Studio if you cannot see all of your pairwise comparisons)
If you were approached only by Warner Brothers and Weinstein, which would you pick and why? Support your response with data from your ANOVA.
Assignment Requirements
Prepare your Assignment submission in Microsoft Word following standard APA formatting guidelines: Double spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font, and one-inch margins on all sides. Include a title page, table of contents, and references page. You do not need to write an abstract. Label all tables and figures. Cite sources appropriately both in the text of your writing (parenthetical citations) and on your references page (full APA citation format).
For more information on APA style formatting, go to APA Style Central under Academic Tools of this course.
