Choose one of the dramatic monologues we read by Browning or Tennyson; you may also choose to write about Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “The Runaway Slave at Pilgrim’s Point.” Discuss in particular how the poet’s language and technique help to create a psychological portrait of a character distinct from the poetic “I.” Don’t just look at what the character says, but how the poem is structured, and how its language, metaphors, and sounds help to characterize the speaker.
