Essay 2: A Father’s Dilemma

The father in this film is confronted with a moral dilemma. What is this dilemma? For the utilitarian, does the father make the right choice? Why or why not? Do you agree with the utilitarian about the father’s decision? Defend your answer with reasons.

The purpose of this assignment is to see that you know how to apply a moral theory to a problematic case. This is an important critical thinking skill. So, in writing the essay, make sure you show that you understand utilitarianism and how the theory would be applied to the father’s dilemma.

To receive full credit for this assignment, please follow the instructions below.

  1. Your essay should be no less than 200 words and no more than 300 words. This is a short essay, so be concise and to the point.
  2. Directly address the essay question, as explained above. You should describe the dilemma confronting the father, explain why the utilitarian would or would not agree with the father’s decision, state your own position on the issue, and defend your position with reasons.
  3. Demonstrate that you can write at a college level. This is not a text message. You should write in standard English, using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and paragraph construction.
  4. Submit your essay no later than 11:59 PM Friday, June 4. To submit your essay, click on “Essays” in the Blackboard menu. Then click on “Essay 2” and upload your essay into the system. It is important that your submission is a Word document. Otherwise, I may not be able to read it.

If you follow these instructions, you will receive 10 points for your essay. Otherwise, points may be subtracted.
