Writing Homework Help

Over the course of my class, we were required to write journals on different short stories and poetry. Each journal must be one full page, double-spaced, except for the last 2, which are 2 pages long. Every journal has its own individual reading, which is usually very short. I have 17 journals due by 10:30 PM on Jul 27. Below are the journals and their instructions, starting from the first day.

Journal #1: before class, write in your journal a one-page response to what you learned about reading literature, the literary elements, what you feel will be challenging (or always has been challenging, giving the reason) about reading novels, stories and poetry. For those interested in current critical strategies for reading literature, review chapter 51.

Jun 22 – “Setting” and “Genre”

Read “Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, p. 15. Journal #2: before class, write in your journal a one-page response to the story.

Jun 23 – “Style, Tone, Irony in Language” and “Figurative Language”

Read “Lust” by Susan Minot, p. 282. Journal #3: before class, write in your journal a one-page response to the story.

June 24 – “Plot” and “Theme”

Read “Killings” by Andre Dubus, p. 89. Journal #4: before class, write in your journal a one-page response to the story.

June 28 – “Character and Setting”

Read “A&P” by John Updike, p. 200. Also read, “Love in L.A.” by Dagoberto Gilb, p. 458 Journal #5 and #6: before class, write in your journal a one-page response to each story.

June 29 – “Point of View” and “Character”

Read “The Lady with the Pet Dog” by Anton Chekhov (a Canvas file). Journal #7: before class, write in your journal a one-page response to the story.

June 30 – “Symbolism”

Read “Battle Royal” by Ellison, p. 227. Journal #8: before class, write in your journal a one-page response to each story.

July 1- “Symbolism” (cont.) Read “The Hand” by Colette (Canvas). Journal #9: before class, write in your journal a one-page response to each story. Then we will review procedures and techniques for writing an analysis of a work of prose fiction and for submitting an MLA documented paper with proper MLA design format. Review chapter 52 & 53 in Bedford.

Read “Western Wind,” p. 604; Robert Hayden’s “Those Winter Sundays” p. 591; Shakespeare’s “That Time of Year” p. 1064. Journal #10: before class, select two poems and write in your journal a one-half page response to each.

July 8 – Images and Imagism

We will look at the central role “image” plays in poetry. Read e. e. cummings’ “l(a,” p. 603; William’s “The Red Wheelbarrow,” p.808; Stevens’ “Anecdote of the Jar,” p. 721; Dickinson’s “After Great Pain,” p. 846; Frost’s “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” p. 883. Journal #11: before class, select two poems and write in your journal a one-half page response to each.

July 12– Carpe Diem

We turn to the carpe diem theme in poems by Herrick, “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time, p. 645; Marvell’s “To His Coy Mistress,” p. 647; Ann Lauinger’s “Marvell Noir” p. 649 and Richard Wilbur’s “A Late Aubade” (Poetry handout on Canvas). Journal #12: before class, select two poems and write in your journal a one-half page response to each poem. Final draft of explication/analysis # 1 due.

July 13 – Relationships

From Canvas poetry handout read Adrienne Rich’s “Living in Sin” and Sharon Olds’ “Sex without Love.” Journal #13: before class, write in your journal a one-half page response to each poem.

July 14 – Relationships (cont.)

From Canvas poetry handout read Robert Hass’ “Privilege of Being” and Sylvia Plath’s “Mirror.” Journal #14: before class, write in your journal a one-half page response to each poem.

July 15 – Symbols

Read Santiago Baca’s “Green Chile” (Canvas handout) and Frost’s “The Road Not Taken,” p. 871. Journal #15: before class, write in your journal a one-half page response to each poem. A short review will be conducted specific to writing an explication/analysis paper on poetry. Review chapter 52 & 53 in Bedford.

July 22 – We will discuss I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, chapters 1-19. Journal # 16 Before you come to class, write in your journal a two-page response to the assigned chapters.

July 26 – We will discuss I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, chapters 20-end. Journal # 17. Before you come to class, write in your journal a two-page response to the assigned chapters.
