The purpose of rhetoric and argument does not always have to be to win and to defeat. Instead, we can also listen to others, better understand different views, empathize, and/or open ourselves to being changed. In class, we have discussed the use of Rogerian Argument as a way to defuse tense situations and create common ground. We have also considered times when a Rogerian Argument may not be appropriate, such as when a writer is passionate about an issue, if the writer is in the minority, or if you cannot find sources you disagree with.
