Discussion boards acts as a way for us to engage in reflection about the readings and activities we have completed for this week to enhance your understanding of the concepts we are studying. This week’s discussion is designed so that you can participate even if you are still waiting on the textbook or are late getting started on the readings.
Please log into the class and take part in the weekly discussions frequently to show your participation.
Three (3) posts are required:
- Post 1 (minimum 250 words) answers 1 of the 4 questions asked and is due by Thursday,
- Reply 1 (minimum 150 words) to one your classmates’ comments and is due by Sunday,
- Reply 2 (minimum 150 words) to one of your classmates’ comments and is due by Sunday.
You may choose any question to answer, but will need to respond to peers in two other threads. Each time you sign on, here is what you are to do:
- Read all the posts. First and foremost, this is a discussion. It is a conversation among members of the class. In order for it to be such, you have to read what others post.
- If you wish to comment on the same topic, you click “Reply” at the bottom of a classmate’s post and begin your post. You should not just repeat the same thing the earlier poster said. Instead, aim to continue the conversation, bringing in new material from the book, other sources, and your personal experience.
- You are required to post at least three (3) times during the week and each of these posts needs to be a significant contribution to the conversation.
- The posts should say something.
- They should expand the conversation and integrate course readings or other resources.
- They should pose thoughtful and interesting contributions to a continued discussion. In other words, agreeing with and repeating what the prior student posted does not count 🙂
- The other thing that does not count is if you don’t read what others post and simply start a new thread and say the same thing others have already posted.
Ideally, if everything works exactly right, at the end of each week, there should be different conversations on the board that everyone has contributed to and everyone can relate to — not 20 posts that say the same thing. You will find that it is much more beneficial to your learning this way.
- This week, your main discussion (Post 1) should fully answer the questions using concepts addressed in the readings and examples to support your understanding. A minimum of 250 words is required and due by Thursday.
- Reply posts (Post 2 and Post 3) should be at least 150 words and should significantly further our discussion. Remember to do more than just agree or disagree with your classmates. Support your ideas with details, examples, and quotes (cite your sources as well). Proper academic writing is expected. Be sure to include word counts at the end of each posting and response for maximum credit and to submit them by Sunday.
- It is also recommended that you check your discussion and respond to any questions posted by your instructor. Aim to answer any questions posed to increase your overall grade for your Post 1.
- It is also required that you first respond to a student who does NOT have any responses. If every student has at least one response, then you are free to choose any discussion to respond to. It is also a good practice to respond to students who answered a different Discussion Question than you did. This will help you prepare for the exams and expand your understanding of course concepts.
