– THEIR DISCUSSION
A private community is a place where a group of people live that is generally sectioned off and exclusive only to the residents of the community and their guest. The people that live in private communities become members of an association, and pay fees to the association, they also live by set rules established by the association in addition to all the normal rules and laws a non-community member must follow. Private communities (Gated Communities) are generally isolated pockets of wealth filled with sometimes very influential people seeking to live among like minded people, and away from the general populace. Gated communities maximize consumer choice, and generally access to things which the average citizen doesn’t have access to which are all generally good things. The total package provides the residents with almost all their general needs, top quality security, opulent shelter, and a core group of neighbors who they get along with, the only thing they generally are lacking is food which means the residents must venture out to the store and re-enter the society they sought to get away from. Blakely, I think is 100 percent correct in stating that “they create physical barriers to access. And they privatize community space, not merely individual space” (Levy, 2016, p. 110-111) Gated communities I feel really instill a (US vs Them) mind set in people who don’t live in the community. But I admit my thinking may be flawed in a sense because the residents of gated communities are just living the “American Dream” right, I’m sure they worked hard and earned the right to live behind walls, in an oversized house because that to them is what it means to make it in America. I think what many people gated community residents forget is that by living in gated communities they cut themselves off from the general populace which they ultimately rely on. Also, cities must provide utilities to these communities and with many of them not being in urban environments that ends up putting a strain on municipal systems. Another major issue with the communities is that as a selling point the community will have some type of selling feature at the heart or periphery of the community, such as a golf course, or marina. These amenities require large amounts of upkeep and can end up being harmful to the environment in the long run. I don’t really have a problem with them as I live in an urban environment and don’t really interact with them but for people who live outside there walls or do landscaping on the vegetation in them I can see how they might be resentful of some of the people, or maybe they’d take it as inspiration to some day live there.
