Introduction
The Cold War ended over a decade before the 21st century began. What was supposed to be a “Brave New World” free of the threat of nuclear conflict and a long period of peace and prosperity has been less than what was expected. Yes, communism as a threat to the world and to the dominance of the United States and capitalism has come to pass, but even though the threat of war from the USSR never materialized (thankfully) a new threat did rise up to challenge the U.S. and the West for control. The rise of radical Islamic groups bent on destroying those they call infidels, especially the United States and Western Europe have caused more than a little death, destruction, and despair to a world hoping those threats had ended.
Instructions
For the initial post, address one of the following:
- Option 1: Why wasn’t the U.S. and its vastly superior intelligence and military able to stop these attacks? How effective are current measures in dealing with attack prevention? Have we really learned from past mistakes?
- Option 2: What new problems did the Iraqi War cause for the U.S. and its allies around the world? What effects has it had on the U.S. economy?
- Option 3: How much more difficult is it to battle an idea or faith, even a violent one, skewed and brutal than to defeat a nation in war like the U.S. and its allies did during World War II? Consider the role technology plays in the dissemination of faith.
- Option 4: Compare European imperialism to current globalism. How has each changed society, both in industrialized nations and developing nations? Is the claim that globalism is a form of imperialism valid?
- Option 5: Where do we go from here? Who will the best friends and the worst enemies of the United States be in the coming decades? Will we really, finally achieve that peace and prosperity we all hoped would come to pass?

Option 1
The United States is known for being involved with other countries and knowing everything there is to know. But the United States’ attention was not on the Islamic terror groups or the hostile environment within the Middle East. Attention was finally brought to what was going on once everything moved out of Iran and spilled into other nations (Duiker, 2015). Before this point, Iran and the United States were allies, especially when it came to the oil trade. Hostilities were high to begin with in the Middle East after WWII and the Cold war was called off because Pakistan was upset about Jews coming in and having representation. Many in the Middle East did not agree with this idea and since the United States did not step in, it may them not favorable among the people. But once the terror attacks occurred on 9/11, the United States became very aware of the problems in the Middle East and how extreme these groups were. Today, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) has implemented articles in place to combat terrorism to help combat what was occurring (N.A.T.O.E, 2021). Also implemented are travel restrictions which usually are what can and cannot be brought on to transportation as well as X-ray and metal detecters. These are to ensure that no attacks occur, or to help lessen the ones that do occur. This has not been a fool proof plan. There has still been attacks in public places and plane highjacking, but none as terrible as 9/11. The United States has also sent troops to the Middle East to locate and arrest the ring leaders of the extremist groups. Sadly, past mistakes are still being made. There is too much going on in the world for the United States to be able to watch everything. This makes it hard to prevent attacks and stop the extremist groups. History has a funny way of repeating itself, but hopefully it does not repeat itself when it comes to the 9/11 attacks and the issues that are occurring in the Middle East.
