EDU 131 Assignment 4: NAEYC Code of Conduct in Practice

For this assignment, you will write an essay focused on using the Code of Ethical Conduct to systematically solve an ethical dilemma.  You will have specific prompts to complete each paragraph of the essay. After carefully reviewing the NAEYC Code of Conduct and viewing the posted videos How to Use the Code and The Nap Case, consider the following ethical dilemma:

You are a preschool teacher. A parent of a preschooler in your program is concerned that his child will not be ready for kindergarten next year. The parent has a copy of the kindergarten placement test and would like you to begin preparing his child with flash cards and homework sheets, and deliver the test before the end of the year. He wants his children to succeed in school! You know that high stakes testing is not developmentally appropriate in a preschool classroom, and that developmentally appropriate practice includes children learning through play. You have a very carefully planned curriculum and intentionally provide learning opportunities through fun activities that are primarily child selected with a balance of teacher directed activities included. You know through your education and experience that this is the best way for children to learn. 

Paragraph 1: Provide a brief description of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct, and how this relates to solving ethical dilemmas in child care settings. 

Paragraph 2: In your own words, identify what you think is the main concern, issue, or problem in this situation: What is the parent concerned about?  Why might the parent have this concern?  What do you think the parents understanding of Developmentally Appropriate Practice is?

Paragraph 3 and 4: The code of ethical conduct outlines a professional’s ethical responsibilities to Children, to Families, to Colleagues, and to Community and Society.  To solve this ethical dilemma, you will need to focus primarily on Section 1: Ethical Responsibilities to Children and Section 2: Ethical Responsibilities to Families. Write a paragraph focusing on each of these sections. Include 4-8 principles from each of these sections to you would used to help guide you in how to handle this dilemma.

Paragraph 5: Using the information from the first 4 paragraphs, write a paragraph on how you would ethically and professional handle this dilemma.  What would you say when meeting with the parent to discuss their issue.  What strategies would you use to assist the parent in understanding your response to their request? Include at least 3 from what you have learned in this class.  This could be things like sharing resources, inviting parent to observe, orienting parents to the philosophy of your classroom, etc.  Please provide details of how you would incorporate these strategies.
