Grossmont Cuyamaca Community College District Nutrition Obesity Discussions

part 1

Introduction

In many ways, living in the age of the internet is both a blessing and a curse. One thing that comes to mind is the quick access that we have to information. Some of this information is vetted, some of it is not. It is important to be prudent when going through resources, such as studies, new articles, etc. in order to ensure that we are receiving accurate information. This is true for all types of information, including information relating to nutrition, fitness, and sports.

Your Tasks

Task 1- Choose a topic

Choose a nutrition or physical activity/fitness topic that you would like to use for this discussion assignment. It can be anything!

Task 2- Search the Web

Next, you will conduct a search for information related to your topic. This could be anything from research articles, websites, blog posts, etc. Choose 2 pieces of information that you would like to perform the CRAAP test on.

Important! Please make sure to pick one resources that would pass the test, and one that would fail the test. Also, please make sure that each resource discusses a similar topic. For example, if your one resource talks about fiber, then your other resource would also have to discuss fiber.

Task 3- CRAAP Test

Go through each component of CRAAP for your two resources. As a reminder, the 5 components of CRAAP are: Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose. Note whether or not you think the resource meets each of these components.

Task 4- Original Post

Please address the following in your original post:

  1. What two resources are your comparing? Please provide links to these resources. (1 point for relevance to course, 2 points for articles [one for each article])
  2. Which resource passed the CRAAP test? How do you know that it fulfills each component? Explain. (4 points)
  3. Which resource did not pass the CRAAP test? Which components of the test were not fulfilled in this article? Explain. (4 points)
  4. How has this exercise changed the way in which you will view health articles and information? (5 points)
    • Ideas for this portion: resources that you were using to acquire health information prior to this assignment; the way you determined accurate information prior to this assignment; things that you learned after performing the CRAAP test; etc.

Task 5- Peer Response

Respond to at least 2 classmate’s posts. For this discussion I would like you to look at 2 students’ chosen resources. Then explain whether you agree or disagree about whether or not you agree that the resource passes/doesn’t pass CRAAP, and why.

part two

Introduction

We have learned this week that carbohydrates are a very important energy source, both for the average individual and for athletes. We have also learned that not all carbohydrates are the same and that some carbs confer more health benefits than others. In this discussion I would like us to further explore these different carbohydrates as it relates to athletes.

Your Tasks

Task 1- Research

First, I would like you to do some initial research related to the use of simple versus complex carbohydrates for athletic fueling and performance. Does the type of carbohydrate matter when it comes to energy production, prevention of fatigue, and etc.?

Task 2- Experiment

Next, we will act as our own test subjects! Keep in mind that you will need two separate days to do this. For this experiment you will need to do the following:

  1. Choose a meal that is made up primarily of simple carbohydrates.
  2. Consume this meal 3-4 hours before doing an endurance activity.
    • Note: the endurance activity is up to you. Examples: walking, jogging, swimming, hiking, riding a bike, using an elliptical, etc.
  3. Write down how you are feeling prior to engaging in the endurance activity.
  4. Perform the endurance activity.
  5. Write down how you felt while completing the endurance activity. Did you feel that this meal helped in giving you the energy you needed?
  6. Repeat the above steps on a different day using a meal made up primarily of complex carbs. Note any differences that you observe.

Task 3- Original Post

Please address the following in your original post:

  1. What conclusions did you draw from the research in Task 1? Does the type of carbohydrate matter for exercise performance? Explain.
  2. Share your findings from your experiment. Provide us with the following details:
    1. What did your simple carbohydrate meal contain? What did your complex carbohydrate meal contain?
    2. What differences in your energy and performance did you notice between these two meals? Did one type of meal give you more sustained energy than the other? Did this align with the conclusions from your research?

Task 4- Peer Response

Respond to at least 2 classmate’s posts. Were the conclusions from your research similar or different to theirs? Were you surprised with their experiment findings and/or were they similar/different to your own findings?
