Community College of Allegheny County Horace Minor Essay

An analysis is rhetorical when it describes and evaluates the effectiveness of an author(s) choices. In this essay you will be doing the same by first identifying a significant event, person, or text in your professional/academic field of study. To do that part you might first want to review some general and/or specialized references sources that might provide for you a brief, general history of your field. For some professions/fields there might not be as many general histories and so it might make sense to search a larger cognate (related) field. Come see me or a librarian if you run into this issue.

Once you have identified the event, person, or text of significance, you’ll then want to research primary sources connected to that choice. Locate a primary source (also called an artifact) and write an 850-1000 word essay that describes and evaluates the rhetorical elements of its composition. Review the chapter and lectures on rhetorical analysis to help you with this. Your thesis about this artifact/text should make a claim about the relationship of the individual rhetorical choices of the author and the effectiveness of their purpose. Conclude your essay by commenting on how this source — as far as you can tell — contributes to what you know about the history of your field? For example, were you surprised by this artifact? What did you learn that you didn’t know before?
