Grand Canyon University Pocket Guide to APA Style Discussion

Hi, if you could reply to the following DQs with 100-200 words each. Thank you

Karla:

I have been back in school since February of this year after a 15-year hiatus and so much has changed since I was previously a student. I have been lucky in my courses to have instructors who have kindly corrected me or have given me links to resources to improve my writing skills. I think that using GCU’s APA Writing Checklist has helped me check my work by going through the list as I write my papers, it also helps me become more accountable for my finish work on our assignments. Since my first course, I still find references and citations using APA the hardest. Although I think I have become better at doing my in-text citation and reference lists, I still have trouble with some websites and legal references like bills or laws. When I need reference help, I go to the Student Success Center and click the link “Style Guides & Templates” and I look at the APA style Guide and the GCU Library’s Citing Sources Guide. There you can find links to the APA 7th Edition Book and templates for properly writing papers (Grand Canyon University, n.d).

Devin:

The APA writing checklist has improved my adherence to the APA standards by providing a simple, concise explanation of all writing requirements for each paper. Instructor feedback has also provided direction in using APA formatting, particularly with reference formatting. Prior to starting this program, I had never used APA style before, and the biggest adjustment has definitely been the reference formatting. I have mostly gotten the hang of it by now, but still struggle sometimes with government or grey literature sources, such as congress bills or policy statements (or any other lesser-used source type). For these sources, I have found it helpful to consult the GCU style guide for APA 7 formatting (GCU, n.d.) and to consult Purdue Owl (n.d.), which I often find easier to navigate. I would definitely suggest using these two sources for anyone who may still be struggling with reference formatting or APA formatting more generally.

Quinn:

APA style is used in many different disciplines around the world to portray concise, powerful, and persuasive scholarly communication (American Psychological Association, 2021). The APA Writing Checklist is a document that we use throughout our graduate program that helps us to ensure proper grammar and APA format prior to submitting an assignment.

The APA writing checklist has consistently reminded me that my papers need a thesis, something that I often forget. It has made my papers feel more put together as the checklist lays out the format of the paragraph development of body paragraphs. In my beginning classes, I think that my professors really helped out a lot. I have not been out of school very long before deciding to come back, but the changes from the 6th edition to the 7th edition were enough to throw me since I had been using the older edition for the years of my undergraduate degree. I still struggle to remember the changes that were made such as having a running header, the citation changes etc. I still constantly have to look at the GCU handouts to make sure I am correctly doing it. In cases where I have made mistakes, it is nice when the professors make comments in the grading section of what I did wrong, so that I know what needs to be fixed and how to improve for next time. In addition to using the APA documents that we have been referenced to in each class that are on the GCU website, I often look to the Purdue Owl website for quick citation questions. Purdue Owl has helped me with questions related to how many authors I need to list for in-text citations before you can use et al., or simple formatting issues.
