UCI Why Havent Policy Makers Done Enough to Address Climate Change Essay
Problem/Background:
For the outline, simply list the problem you have selected below. For the paper, please describe the problem in a little more detail and provide some background information on it.
The problem I will focus on is: Global warming
Heuristics/question(s):
For the outline, simply list whether you plan to employ an objectivist or a constructionist orientation and what step of the process you intend to focus on and provide your question. For the paper, you will need to ensure that you demonstrate your understanding of the heuristics you have chosen by offering a few clarifying sentences describing them and why you chose what you chose.
The orientation (objectivism or constructionism) I will use is: constructionism
The step in the social problems process I choose to focus on is:
I focus on Step4; Policymakers pass legislation or fund programs to address the problem. I focus on the role of policy makers.
My sociological question is: why haven’t policy makers done enough to address climate change even in the face of strong evidence?
Sociological perspective(s):
For the outline, simply list what perspectives you plan to employ and try to formulate two hypotheses as best you can. For the paper, you will want to provide a broad overview of the perspective(s) you choose to focus on. That is, you need to discuss the perspective(s) in a way that demonstrates your understanding of its/their main focus. For the paper, you will need to address each of your hypotheses in sufficient detail to demonstrate their grounding in a sociological perspective and with sufficient evidence to build a case for why you think they are correct (similar to the way we have been doing in the forum)
The perspective(s) (Functionalist, Conflict, Institutionalist) I will draw upon to answer my question is/are: Conflict
My first hypothesis is: Policy makers want to promote short-term economic growth without any concern about potential detriment of environment. Company ho only profit without any regard for energy conservation.
My second hypothesis is: Policy makers have been lobbied by large company especially energy company like oil company, and policy makers want to maintain status quo to keep high average energy consumption of their citizens.
Discussion:
Nothing for the outline, but for the paper you will use this to briefly tie your problem to the course as a whole. How does your step of the social problems process fit into the rest of the process? How does your problem understand through your chosen orientation (objectivist/constructionist) compare to the other possible orientation for that problem? Do your hypotheses lend themselves to a solution to the problem (for objectivists) or to a better way of framing it (for constructionists)? You don’t have to answer all these questions, but you do need to tie your discussion to something broader.
