Prompts (choose one):

Option 1: Traditional dresses are also considered as a folk dress. They represent the identity in many countries around the world. It is mostly considered as in Inherited which is subsequently connected to people’s way of thinking and feeling. These traditional dresses also have a strong religious value, for example, the Turban worn by the Sikh community and the veil that is used by many of the Muslim women around the world as an emblem. Along with the religious values, it also identifies the ethnic or political values. These values tend to give these traditional or cultural dresses a meaning with a strong sense of identity. In an experiment performed by Power et al (2011) it was studied that some people consider it just a piece of cloth to wear but to majority of people traditional dress is of great importance and is an identity to them. It is believed by many people that dress or clothing helps in establishing their identity and place in society. A different traditional dress also symbolizes the uniqueness and diversity that can be found all over the world. What is the significance of the traditional dresses in your culture?

Option 2: In her article, Gloria Elizabeth Chacón claims that textiles are more than just woven items, written works can also be classified as textiles. She states: “Moving past the metaphor in their poems, they call for decolonizing our perception of the textile as a non-modern craft and advocate for an understanding of it as a literary form” (Chacón 59). What is your interpretation of this claim and how does this broaden your view of textiles?
