Choose one of your sources and upload an example of a short quote, a long quote, ellipsis to remove something, and brackets to add something. Use proper MLA citation. Follow the model below:

1. Short Quotation (fewer than 4 lines of text)

Time magazine reporter Charles Kaiser states that “If the police raid on the Stonewall Inn had happened earlier, it probably would have been instantly forgotten, like so many other attacks on surreptitious gay meeting places” (44).

2. Long Quotation (block indent quotation: 4 or more lines of text)

Charles Kaiser, reporter for Time magazine, describes how the Stonewall riots began:

on June 28, 1969, when police arrived at 2 a.m. in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village neighborhood to raid the Stonewall Inn, expecting the arrests and flight that were routine in an age when queerness was criminalized, the patrons—drag queens and lesbians, hippies and gay men in suits, a group as diverse as the activists in these photographs—fought back. (46)

3. Using ellipses to remove parts of the quote

According to Charles Kaiser, reporter for Time magazine, “on June 28, 1969, when police arrived at 2 a.m. in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village neighborhood to raid the Stonewall Inn,

. . . the patrons . . . fought back” (46).

4. Using brackets to add words to the quote

According to Charles Kaiser, reporter for Time magazine, “on June 28, 1969 [New York City] police arrived at 2 a.m. in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village neighborhood to raid the Stonewall Inn” (46).
