How can leaders build new leaders? Reply to Priscilla :

In healthcare, the need for leaders continues to increase, and the way we develop them need to be improved. Leaders are needed at all levels and from different perspectives in order to help organizations to achieve their goals and objectives. According to Dye (2017), “To achieve goals of better care, lower costs, improved patient experience, and improved community health, we need new types of leaders and new ways of developing them” (p. 106).

There are ways leaders can build new leaders. One way leaders can build new leaders is by identifying and choosing applicants that have the motivation, capabilities, and desire to become successful leaders. Another way for leaders to build new leaders is through coaching. Leaders should provide coaching for individuals who have the desire and willingness to become new leaders. When leaders provide coaching to new leaders, those new leaders are able to get the advice and guidance that they need in order to help them to better develop and enhance their skills.

As a leader, one thing that I might do to foster the growth and development of future leaders is to encourage learning. By encouraging future leaders to learn, it can help them to acquire new skills, feel ready to take on new challenges, and explore new things. Another thing that I might do to foster the growth and development of future leaders is to provide leadership training. Leadership training can help future leaders to develop their own personal leadership style. Also, it can help future leaders to understand their role as leaders, what task they will need to be involved in, and what it takes for them to be good and successful leaders.

When it comes to selecting someone for leadership training, it is based on two main sources, which are graduate programs in healthcare leadership and healthcare organizations. A person can be selected for leadership training through graduate programs because many of the programs “now emphasize experiential learning, self and other-assessment of student leadership skills, and other ways of providing important knowledge, but they also focus on developing leadership skills” (Dye, 2017, p. 107). Also, a person can be selected for leadership training through healthcare organizations because “some large healthcare systems have well-developed “high potential” programs in which leadership talent is assessed annually and those with the potential for growth are given additional training, assigned coaches and sponsors, and carefully developed throughout increasing levels of responsibility in the organization (Anderson and Garman 2014)” (Dye, 2017, p. 107).

If the individual I have selected has no desire to step into a leadership role, I would move on to select another individual who has the desire and motivation to become a successful leader because nothing good comes from forcing an individual to become a leader if he or she does not want to. As leaders, it is our job to respect and support an individual’s decision. Leaders should be able to understand an individual’s reason for not wanting to step into a leadership role and just accept it because becoming a leader is not for everyone.

How can leaders build new leaders? Reply to Paolo( Asked me this question in reference to my post):

Hi, !

I agree that there should not be any bias in selecting potential employees for leadership roles. The selection process must be transparent and objective to avoid conflict and employee discernment. How do you think this selection process should be to be fair? A selection committee perhaps or through a comprehensive performance evaluation process?
