ENG 309 Alvernia University Antigone Secular and Divine Authority Discussion

One of the central issues in Antigone is the conflict between secular (worldly) and divine (religious) authority. Where does one’s duty lie, Sophocles asks, when the laws of man contradict the laws of God or vice versa? Is it OK to break a religious commandment if it means obeying the government? Alternatively, is a crime against the state justified if it supports religious principles? These are thorny questions, and it’s not uncommon for us to find ourselves in a similar situation, even in the modern world.

Discuss one example of a conflict between secular and divine authority in our own time. For instance, you may wish to write about conscientious objectors, the right to pray in schools, vaccine issues, or any number of dilemmas relating to the separation of church and state.
