Northern Arizona University Great to Good by Jim Collins Paper
For the project read one of the following books:
1. Good to Great by James Collins – this is a 20 year old book that is a very easy read and will give you a number of examples of what organizations have done strategically to change and succeed.
2. Measure What Matters by John Doerr – this is a recent book (2017) from one of the most successful venture capitalists in Silicon Valley. He looks at technology giants like Google and Intel, and how they used goal setting to achieve success.
3. Good strategy/Bad Strategy by Richard Rumelt – if you are interested in strategies, and what makes some successful and others fail, this is an interesting book. This book is 10 years old and a bit more “textbook’ish” than the other two.
Pick the book that will help you based on where you are in your life/career, or what interests you.
Answer the questions based on the book you select and the textbook.
1. Write the top five lessons you learned from the book you selected.
2. Based on the book, the class and the textbook do you believe successful organizations are based on great leaders or great strategy? Explain your response.
3. Write the 10 most important things you believe any organization strategy must have, or must consider
4. Tell me who do you believe is one of the top strategic managers today and why.
5. And finally tell me what five things that you learned from this class.
