Need help with my English question – I’m studying for my class.

You all chose excellent questions to write about concerning Between the World and Me. Now let’s play around with how to explore answers.

1. Write your project’s question focus on the top of your page.
2. Find ideas and quotations that relate to your question.
3. Offer possible interpretations. What is Coates doing here? Or what is Coates saying? Look at your interpretations and see if they start to answer your question. (This can be rough. It’s okay.)
4. By the end, you should have at least three sections, each one with at least one interpretation/claim and one quotation. Note: These don’t need to be complete sentences

• Give necessary background information! In other words:
  • introduce the text (Between the World and Me) and the author (Coates).
• Focus your essay with a focus sentence
  • In the last sentence of your introduction, tell us what one aspect of Coates’s writing your project will discuss.
  • For example, will your essay explore why he writes this essay as a letter? Or why he uses the word “body”? Or why he references American history?

For your body paragraph:

• Start paragraph with a point. (Tell us what the paragraph will be about.)
• Illustrate the point with an example from the text.
