Ages of Planetary Surfaces Essay

 

Most planetary surfaces in the solar system are covered by craters formed by impacts of asteroids and comets. Earth’s moon is a prime example of this. We can use these impact craters to help distinguish relative ages of different regions on an object and sometimes relative ages of the craters themselves.

Describe the process you would use to determine the relative ages of the three surface regions shown in the image below. Then use this process to order the three regions from oldest to youngest. Finally, give the names and describe characteristics of the two dominant surface types on the Moon and briefly explain where each of the three regions shown here is likely to be found.
