CST 229 NVCC W9 Nonverbal Communication Discussion

To examine the precepts of Nonverbal Communication

Directions

  1. Read CH 10 in the text.
  2. First, write out your Initial Posting. For your initial posting, write your reflections on one of the For Further Thought? questions (or activities) found throughout the chapter of your textbook. Remember to elaborate in your initial post on your understanding of the concepts presented and how they relate to your experiences (write around three paragraphs).  Also provide examples from your personal experiences when appropriate. If you prefer, you could also choose to create your own question and write your reflections on something in the text that was relevant or interesting to you (as long as you work to expand upon your knowledge or understanding of the course material).
  3. Second, provide feedback (reply) to at least two of your fellow class members’ initial posts (about one paragraph per reply thread) reflecting on your experiences and how they relate to what was written (to continue the discussion).

How important is nonverbal communication in your workplace? Are there specific nonverbal gestures you express at work consciously as part of your job? Explain your answer. (467)

I work in a dental office and nonverbal communication is essential in our workplace. The nonverbal functions we use is “impression management”, to show that we are credible and competent and gain confidence and trust from our patients, old and new. We wear scrubs as uniforms and must look presentable to look professional.

In the front office, when answering phone calls, a clear and appropriate tone of voice is practiced. When we attend to incoming and outgoing patients, we use eye communications and squint when we smile due to mask restrictions; We also use eye contact when communicating verbally to “monitor feedback” and “secure attention and interest” which is mostly used when presenting a treatment.

When performing restorative treatments alongside the dentist, decoding skills is crucial because the patient is restricted to verbally communicate, and the dentist is mostly focused on the procedure, the assistant is responsible for decoding the patient’s nonverbal cues and be able to identify when the patient feels a slight discomfort, or simply wants a break. Assistants also anticipates the next move when passing instruments to the dentist.

How much space do you need? Examine how close you stand to others when you com- municate with them. Does the distance decrease when you know the person better? When is it appropriate to touch another person? Does gender have any influence in this matter? (pg. 455)

When I talk to people face to face I definitely need my space. I don’t like it when people get too close to my personal “bubble” because for some reason it makes me anxious. I would say I usually stand about three feet away from people at the very least when talking to them.

The distance between me and the person I am talking to doesn’t necessarily decrease when I know the person better. I don’t feel the need to be super close to people (physically) in order to communicate with them. Of course, if I am in a crowded area with someone that I know, I stay closer to them than anyone else, but even in that situation I still appreciate my space.

I think it is appropriate to touch another person when you know them personally and have a closer relationship with them, not just an acquaintance. Usually I don’t enjoy being touched by people but if I’m with my sister or best friend then I don’t have much of a problem with it at all. It all depends on the person though, some people enjoy it and others despise it. That is why it’s important to never touch someone unless you know how they feel about it.

I think gender has a slight influence on this matter. I don’t feel comfortable being too close to men when I am interacting with them, unless it is a romantic partner. I still don’t get close to women either, but I would feel more comfortable being closer to a woman than a man.

Question: Why do you think the small group plays such an important part in these successes? Who would you choose for your business partners if you were starting such a business? What is the difference between individuals running a business and groups?

In the business world, teamwork is critical to overall success. Because people from different countries and cultures come together to do a single task with a different mind, teamwork can generate many innovative ideas for the business. But we all have the same goal in mind. Not only for new ideas but also for problems, we can find solutions faster. When we divide work into groups, it becomes easier for the team to complete tasks more quickly and efficiently.

First and foremost, I would seek out business partners with strong communication skills. In today’s world, communication skills are required. Second, they must be dedicated and understandable in order to work in a group. Trust grows over time as a result of continuous positive experiences. Furthermore, I will choose business partners who collaborate well with others to complete tasks in order to achieve common goals.

Individual decisions are less effective than group decisions. A group decision requires a large number of people to make an effective and creative decision. However, it can sometimes lead to issues such as the leakage of important information and group members’ biases regarding ideas and their backgrounds. But, in my opinion, because we live in a biodiverse country, the group can run a business smoothly. As a result, with knowledge of different cultural backgrounds, it will be simple to run a large-scale business.

Describe an experience you had in your life that served as the basis of personal learning and growth. What was the experience, and how did it influence your perception of the world around you? Chapter 11 Page 474

When COVID-19 hit Virginia I had no idea that everything I had worked for the past 3 years could vanish within minutes. I am a personal trainer and Pilates instructor. I used to work at a gym where I ran the Pilates department and taught as well. I built the program up to hit 15K per month. This experience influenced my perception that you can’t have all your eggs in one basket. Also that having an education to fall back on is a good back up plan. I was furloughed for months and when I was brought back the gym was a ghost town. People didn’t feel comfortable leaving their houses let alone going to a gym. It was a hard pill to swallow that it wasn’t the same anymore.

That is why I am taking CST 229 I am only 1 more semester away from earning my General Studies in Applied Sciences. I am excited to have a degree that I can put on resumes and slowly work towards my bachelors. I learned the hard way that I didn’t have an education to fall back on when the world got crazy. Know I will be prepared if another COVID-19 break out happens again.
