ENG 507 Grand Canyon University Needs Statement and Sponsor Selection Analysis

Write a 350-500-word needs statement followed by a statement of your sponsor choice and a 100-200-word justification of your sponsor choice. This Paper Project is due by end of Topic 2.

The Scenario: As you have learned from readings and discussion, grant proposals are not just about “getting money.” Rather, they are about identifying problems and solutions that organizations can solve by working together. To build the working relationship between problem solvers, grant seekers, and grant funders, carefully constructed rhetoric is necessary. The construction of that rhetoric begins at the moment we start to articulate the problem for an audience.

Your Task: Analyze a problem that affects an organization in which you are active, articulate a realistic solution that your organization can implement, and evaluate a potential source of funding. The problem you identify must be local and manageable for the fast pace of our course. It can even be part of a larger problem. It must also be a problem that affects an organization with which you are affiliated: your employer, your church, or a volunteer group is good places to start. You will then propose a solution or partial solution to this problem.

This assignment consists of two parts.

Part 1: The Needs Statement: Once you have selected a local problem or even part of a problem affecting an organization with which you are affiliated, draft a needs statement that is 350-500 words long. Your needs statement should include:

  1. A description of the problem. Consider: who does the problem affect? How does the problem affect them? What is the scope of the problem? What is the background of the problem? What has caused the problem? Why is it important to solve this problem?
  2. A description of your proposed solution. Consider: Who will benefit from this solution? How would they benefit? Who would be involved in carrying out the project? What makes you think you would succeed? How would this project fit with your organization’s goals or mission?
  3. A statement of instrumental purpose. What do you want the sponsor to do after reading the proposal?
  4. Rhetorical appeals. Have you established your credibility and the credibility of your organization? Have you used logical reasoning? Have you established the timeliness of your project (i.e., why now?)? Do you have sufficient emotional appeal? Too much emotional appeal?

Part 2: Select a Sponsor

Using electronic resources, select a sponsor for whom you will write this proposal. State the name of the sponsor, and then explain how the mission and goals of the sponsoring organization (and/or the organization’s RFP) will be a good fit with the project you propose.
