DZC Human Game Begun to Play Itself Essay

Background

In our first unit, we looked at how philanthropy uses rhetoric to mask their true intents, and how communities can obtain a substantial life through organizing and indigenous knowledge. Next, we turned to environmentalist Bill McKibben’s Falter: Has the Human Game Begun to Play Itself Out? In his first three parts “Size of the Board,” “Leverage,” and “The Name of the Game,” McKibben lays out the problems as he sees them, “Put simply, between ecological destruction and technological hubris, the human experiment is now in question” (McKibben 1).

Assignment

For this second essay I would like you to utilize the first 3 parts of McKibben’s Falter to consider how “For at least a century, in our high consumer paradise, we’ve devoutly believed that more is better” (McKibben 172). And how that devotion has caused the world we inhabit, or will inhabit.

To find a focus, review your active reading (yes you should be annotating your book), and write down a few of the ideas, examples, questions, etc. that intrigued you. Your essay will need to focus on specific aspects of the text to develop a through line for your essay. A through line holds the essay together allowing all the parts to relate. You can develop a through line by repeating key words and phrases. For example, if you focused on how our desire for more fuel is a cause for global warming, then “fuel” and “global warming,” or some form, would appear in every paragraph. Furthermore, every paragraph would be devoted to arguing for this “cause.”
