AMIND 440 Cuyamaca College Wk 15 The Doctrine of Discovery Questions

  1. Welcome to Module 15, which is the last week of new materials for the semester! This week we will wrap up our materials for the semester by reading the final chapters of our textbook: “Doctrine of Discovery” on pages 197-217 and “The Future of the US” on pages 218-236. While reading, please take careful notes to prepare for week’s final discussion blog posts.
  1. Next, please carefully listen to/read and take notes on our final Week 15 PowerPoint Lecture. Both voice-over and lecture notes have been provided. As always, be sure to take careful notes throughout. Our final lecture will wrap up key points from this week’s materials, further discuss key terms, share more related materials, raise important questions to consider, and bring our course “full circle” with closing ideas.
  1. To better understand the multi-faceted applications of our key term “self-determination” and learn more from tribal members, please watch the panel discussion called “Beyond Sovereignty: New Solutions for Self-Determination.” As you watch, be sure to take notes and consider your thoughts/reactions to prepare for your Blog #7.
  1. After completing the readings and the PowerPoint, please write your very last Blog #7 for the semester! Remember to not only answer all parts of the prompt and meet the word minimum requirements in your initial post, but also remember to post a response to a peer as well!
  1. For this week’s final discussion blog posts, please answer the following questions in 400 words minimum. Also don’t forget to post a response to a peer as well in at least 200 words minimum!
  1. 1) Why and how is the term “Doctrine of Discovery” returning at the end of the textbook? How does “The Doctrine of Discovery” seem to manifest itself, according to Dunbar-Ortiz? Be sure to provide specific examples from the reading.
  2. 2) What does Dunbar-Ortiz mean by “Narratives of Dysfunction”? What are these narratives rooted in? How does she advocate changing these narratives?
  3. 3) What examples of “self-determination” are discussed in the video “Beyond Sovereignty”? What solutions do the panelists provide for different issues?
  4. 4) What does a “race to innocence” and a “no-fault history” mean, according to Dunbar-Ortiz?
  5. 5) According to the final chapter, how can US society come to terms with its past responsibly? How might this acknowledgment be healing to all people in the US?
  6. 6) Lastly, please take a moment to reflect on the course overall – what materials resonated with you personally? What were your most important take-aways from this course?
