Kim Wehle claims that reading the Constitution is like reading poetry because the document contains many undefined terms and requires readers’ interpretation. I agree with her perspective because of these two reasons.

Firstly, the Constitution has ambiguity and vagueness and needs to be clarified by the exercise of judgment. The Constitution is the state’s fundamental law, and it is challenging to prescribe every norm written in articles. This ambiguity is also to respond flexibly to changes in society and time. Various theories and precedents on this abstract norm accumulated by experts help us interpret the terms of the Constitution. This is similar to how a critic’s critique of the words of a poem aids the reader’s interpretation.

Secondly, the interpretation of the Constitution may vary, and different interpretations compete with each other. Therefore, if the social mood or common value system changes, the interpretation of the Constitution changes to reflect those changes even though the articles of the Constitution remain the same. In the U.S., the Supreme Court is empowered to test the constitutionality of laws passed by the national legislature, and specific results of judicial review cases might change. It seems as if the interpretation of verses of a poem can become different according to the times and contexts.
