INSTRUCTIONS:

The following discussion questions cover Week 7 module. Please choose one of the questions and post your comment. After you post your comment, you will be able to see other classmates’ comments. Please respond to two classmates’ comments.

Your comment should be at least 100 words. Each of your responses to two classmates should be two or three sentences (around 30 words for each). Please respect your classmates’ opinions. No insults are allowed and tolerated.

QUESTIONS:

  • 1) What were some of the factors in the 1960s that led to the emergence of the conservative movement during the 1970s and 80s? To answer this question, please cite and discuss two specific examples (factors) from Lisa McGirr’s Suburban Warriors.
  • 2) How do the Iran-Contra affair and crack cocaine epidemic reveal some problems and contradictions in Reagan’s political and economic policies on both national and global scales? To answer this question, please discuss these scandals in relation to Regan’s political and economic stance. Please cite and discuss two specific examples from this week’s class materials.

3) This class has discussed the histories of women’s organizing through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries — these include women’s suffrage movement, Second-Wave Feminism, and this week, “kitchen-table” activists for the conservative movement (McGirr). How can we observe and understand the diversity of women and their organizing from these historical cases, in terms of race, gender, sexuality, class, and political ideologies? Please cite and discuss two specific examples from McGirr and one of the previous course readings.
