Small Writing 1: Origin Story serves as a prewriting and/or invention strategy for Writing Project 1: Literacy Narrative. In entertainment and art, an “origin story” is the backstory or personal history of a main character—and in this case, you’re the main character! This small writing project will help you develop your storytelling skills as you reflect and remember a single instance of literacy development.

Project Description

Storytelling is a social and cultural activity that supports the art of narrative. Your Origin Story should be 250-500 words long and contain all the elements of a good story (Theme, Setting, Plot, Characters, Dialogue, Conflict, Resolution, Point-of-view, Tone, and Style) and focus on a single instance of literacy development. There are many different types of literacy, but keep these definitions in mind as you’re writing:

• Single Instance: One occurrence during a single place and time in your life
• Literacy Development (Functional): The process of learning to read/write or listen/speak
• Literacy Development (Experiential): The process of learning a new activity or skill
