HWE 498 Ashworth College Week 3 Professional Organizations Discussion

Certifications and Professional Organizations

The health and wellness arena is always evolving and thus, it is important to continue your educational journey through certifications and other professional development opportunities. Networking with other professionals in the field is also crucial for health and wellness providers. This can be done by attending conferences, meetings, or by joining professional organizations. There are many benefits to joining professional organizations within your field. Read the article by Scholnik (2013) on the benefits of joining a professional organization and review the Download BAHW Organization and Certification Resource Guide. Address the following elements:

  • Explain two benefits of belonging to a professional organization and how these benefits would be relevant to your professional goals.
  • Select two professional organizations you are interested in joining and explain their membership benefits. How would becoming a member with these organizations help you in your future career?
  • Assess two certifications or credentials that would be relevant to you and your future role. What are the requirements for certification or credentialing?

Use at least two credible sources to support your research and findings. All sources must be referenced (Links to an external site.) and cited (Links to an external site.) according to APA guidelines, as outlined in the Writing Center. Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length.

Guided Response: Respond to at least two classmates by Day 7. Discuss whether you would benefit from the organizations and certifications/credentials your peers chose. Would your peers profit from your selected organizations or certifications? Why or why not? Each post should be at least 100 words in length.

Explain two benefits of belonging to a professional organization and how these benefits would be relevant to your professional goals. One listed benefit of joining a professional organization is the access to policy updates, this would be critical working in a health field where the consequences for errors or false practices can be serious (Scholnik, 2013). Another benefit is the availability of industry standards which means being able to stay updated on statistics and practices that help with opportunities and things like certifications (Scholnik, 2013).Select two professional organizations you are interested in joining and explain their membership benefits. How would becoming a member with these organizations help you in your future career? Currently there are no professional organizations I am interested in joining, however, if I were to do so I would seek organizations which provide assistance in advancement through a career, support for acquiring resources, and a positive environment or community. Ideally, I would be able to learn new things which would help me develop my knowledge and skills, acquire any important licenses or certifications while learning about others I may need, and find answers to any questions I may have.Assess two certifications or credentials that would be relevant to you and your future role. What are the requirements for certification or credentialing? Being certified as a wellness coach is one thing which would be relevant and can be done in a variety of ways such as online courses which are offered as “x-week” programs and typically involve tests. The same would be said for nutrition, fitness, and many others as all of these relate to the field and many can be earned through short classes in person or online. Having a degree in a related field is the first step.ReferencesScholnik, J. (2013, September). 5 benefits of joining a professional association (Links to an external site.). USA Today. There are many benefits to belonging to a professional organization. The opportunity for internship and credible leads on job openings in the field (Scholnik, 2013). Internships are a great way to gain experience but also have a number of other benefits. According to Indeed, internships provide job experience, research experience, mentorship, career guidance, professional networking, strengthen resumes, good references, build confidence, and help you transition into a permanent position (Indeed, 2020). Another benefit to belonging to a professional organization is access to up-to-date industry information. Newsletters from professional organizations provide members with information on continuing education opportunities, new certifications, and best practices in the field (Scholnik, 2013). Being up-to-date on industry information can be helpful when interviewing for new positions. The professional organizations that I am interested in are the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Council on Exercise. The American College of Sports Medicine membership benefits includes access to monthly newsletters and peer-reviewed journals, continuing education discounts, access to events and conferences, professional resources, and credibility in your chosen field (ACSM, 2021). Becoming a member of the American College of Sports Medicine would help me in my future career by demonstrating that I have the knowledge necessary to perform the job of Health Coach. It will also be helpful in staying current and furthering my education. The membership benefits of the American Council on Exercise include access to continuing education and certifications, career support, access to new research, professional networking, and professional recognition (ACE, n.d.). Becoming a member of the American Council on Exercise would have similar benefits to the American College of Sports Medicine. It will help ensure that I have the education and credibility necessary to work as a Health Coach. The two certifications that would be relevant to my future role as a Health Coach would be the ACE Health Coach Certification and the ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist Certification. The requirements for the ACE Health Coach certification include having a current CPR and AED certificate, having an associate’s degree or higher in fitness, exercise science, nutrition, healthcare, wellness, or a related field, be at least 18 years of age, and pass the exam (ACE, n.d.). For the ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist Certification, you must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science or equivalent, hold a current Adult CPR/AED Certification and pass the ACSM-EP exam (ACSM, 2021).ReferencesACE.
