Old Orchard Jr High School Epic Literature Annotated Bibliography

This class will explore a multitude of themes within Epic Literature. Select one theme/critical theory/site of exploration and annotate (5) articles based on this theme. Finally, summarize the research presented in a paragraph. Overall, the 5 articles should tie to your theme/critical theory/ site of exploration and the paragraph should analyze the data presented.

Task: Create an annotated bibliography for the secondary sources and write a short statement of purpose for the research (the goal of the research).

Length: 4-5; 1000-1125, the word count does not include the bibliographic entries that precede the annotations.

Elements of the Annotations:

1. You will select and annotate ALL sources for this bibliography. Each bibliographic entry should follow correct MLA formatting. Annotations should follow the format provided below.

2. Selecting sources: You should find a variety of reputable sources on your topic including opposing viewpoints. Your sources should also represent different opinions within your topic (in other words, this should not be a one-sided look at your topic). Of your sources, you should include the following:

a. ALL must be peer-reviewed journal articles and found on library databases

3. Annotations (150-200 words each) should include:

a. Brief summary of the source

b. Assess the author, audience, purpose, and publication

c. Reflect the relevance of the source for your topic

4. Annotations should be written in complete sentences. The thoroughness of your annotations tells me how careful a reader you are as well as how well you know each source. You should maintain an academic tone and present analyses of your sources that would be useful for a reader who wishes to learn more about your topic.

Elements of the Statement of Research:

1.Topic within the field

2. Gap in the literature

3. Your project fills this gap

4. Texts examined

5. Original argument

6. Concluding sentence

What I’ll Be Looking for When I Grade:

1. Do the annotations follow the guidelines provided above?

2. Is each bibliographic entry complete and correct according to MLA guidelines?

3. Do your annotations cover the information outlined above?

4. Do your annotations provide an analytical evaluation of your sources?

5. Are your annotations written in clear, concise prose?

6. Have you maintained an academic tone and proofread?

7. Have you found a variety of reputable and appropriate sources that cover a variety of opinions?

8. Have you included the required types of sources (as outlined above)?

9. Have you used in-text citations if you use a specific source in your abstract?

10. Is the statement of research at least 5-10 sentences that sets the tone for the data?

Guidance:

  1. Be consistent in your presentation. Adopt a format for your citations and annotations and stick with it, use the templates to keep sources consistent.
  2. Consider how your sources fit together. Do they contradict or support each other? What perspectives do they demonstrate? Are there any perspectives you feel are missing from your sources?
