Grand Canyon University Lifestyle Theories of Victimization Discussion

1) Lifestyle theories of victimization assert that changing roles and schedules in daily life affect the number of situations with high victimization risks that a person experiences. Describe lifestyles that are considered most at-risk versus those considered least at-risk for victimization. Do you believe crime preventive measures that use this type of theory and research are “blaming the victim” or simply using common sense to try to reduce an individual’s risk?

Student 1) According to Adler et al. (2018), “it maintains that because of changing roles (working mother versus homemaker) and schedules (a child’s school calendar), individuals lead various lifestyles (work and leisure activities) (p. 199). And because of these lifestyles individuals are at a greater risk to be a victim at certain point. Individuals who are constantly going to clubs and leaving their drinks unattended are more likely to be a victim of the date rape drug. Individuals who stay alert and who associate with law-abiding persons are less likely to be a victim (Adler et al., 2018). Somebody who partners with someone like a drug dealer has a greater chance (Adler et al., 2018). Females who dress, wearing exposing attire are more likely to be victim than somebody who does not show off their body.

According to Turanovic et al. (2015) “integrated perspective maintains that people with weak self-discipline have a tendency to put themselves in dangerous conditions, such as abusing substances, selling drugs, and most notably, participating in several forms of criminal offending” (p.184). Public service messages are constantly being sent out to the public. The public always wants to blame the victim when obviously, we are always being told to be safe, eat better etc. We are told not to drink, not eat too many fats, and not do drugs but these messages go across our heads (Adler et al., 2018). I think that these public prevention methods are striving to help people decrease the risk of being a victim. I believe people neglect to take the preventions serious. Then when it something occurs to them, they want to play the victim card. I assumed at certain time I would say something like identify burglary would not occur to me, but it can. I am training myself for such circumstances and heeding to the prevention methods that can help me not to be a victim.
