San Diego State University Target Audience Rhetorical Strategies Questions

Write a short response to the following:

  1. Target Audience – Who do you want to reach?
If you can address your research paper to anyone, who’d it be? Policy makers, city or state leaders, or constituents attending a town hall? Or maybe folks at Silicon Valley, energy tycoons, or industry magnates? Perhaps you want to connect with Gen Z, folks of a specific race or gender or geographic location … or maybe you just want to reach the average, college-educated citizen … Whoever you decide as your target audience, know that it will affect the way you frame and present your argument and message.
What to submit: In two sentences, specify who the target audience is for your paper and explain why you selected this target audience.
NOTE: Be specific! If you pick “average, college-educated citizen in the US … ” clarify this demographic further (e.g., “average, college-educated citizen in the US who may be familiar with the concept of X, but may not understand how it affects them directly to take action about it.”)
  2. Rhetorical Strategies – How do you reach them?
All the articles in Acting Out Culture are exemplary models of rhetorical appeals in action. For your essay, I’d like you to consider how you might be able to adopt one, two, or all three rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) to effectively convey your message to your target audience.
What to submit: In a paragraph or bullet-point list, identify which appeal(s) you’d like to adopt, whereand how it might appear in your essay, and why it is appropriate for your target audience.
    Example:

    • Pathos: I will adopt pathos at the beginning of my essay as my introduction. I will relate a personal anecdote to draw the reader into a story about my topic on (X), and then I will explain how it represents the issue of (Y) before presenting my thesis statement. I believe this is an appropriate strategy since (X) is a highly controversial topic and so (my target audience) will probably able to broach it more easily if the issue is somehow humanized first.
