Annotation 1:
Cornell Notes + Vocabulary Log

Assignment Guidelines:

For this assignment, apply the “Cornell Note-Taking System (Links to an external site.)” to completing the annotation on “Bad Thinkers (Links to an external site.).”

  • Download download (or type out your own) and start reading and annotate.
  • In your Textbook Chapter 2, find the section on “Weekly Vocabulary Log.” To complete your main assignment this week, you need to select FIVE (5) new, repeating keywords from the article as your 4th section in this annotation submission.

Required Sections for “Cornell Annotation + Vocabulary Log”:

Note that the Cornell Notes include the first 3 areas and the 4th one is from our Textbook:

  1. Cue Column—used for questions, keywords, and definitions
    • This is also the place to write down your pre-reading questions
  2. Note-Taking Area—this is the place for the main notes
    • This is where you take notes during reading
  3. Summary—your quick explanation of the article and its main idea
    • This is how you test your comprehension after you finish reading the text
  4. Vocabulary Log—keep a record of FIVE new words or phrases along with their (1) definition, (2) usage, and (3) example(s) in the sentence. You need to include all three for your vocabulary log to be considered complete.
    • This is where you include at least five new words or parts of speech of the new words that you encounter in the text

Learning Objectives:

  • Practice close-reading and identify main ideas from the text
  • Analyze the structure of an academic journal article
  • Assess one’s current breadth of vocabulary knowledge
  • Reflect on the use of pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading strategy
