Proper Way to Handle and Display Cultural Artifacts Discussion Questions

COLLAPSE

In this week’s lecture, we traced the evolution of Greek art through six periods in the nation’s history. Some themes covered included technical advancement through the Classical periods, the Greek pantheon of gods, storytelling and emotion in the Late Classical and Hellenistic periods, and anatomical study in Greek art.

What I would like to focus on in this discussion thread, however, is a more contemporary concern: that of repatriation and the proper way to handle and display cultural artifacts. After viewing the Parthenon Marbles debate video, please share your own take on this issue below. What do you feel should be done about the marbles? Is the British Museum the best steward for their continued preservation and promotion or do they belong in Greece? What might be a possible solution to the issue? And how might this particular case relate to broader issues of art ownership and exhibition? Debates over the ownership of cultural antiquities are held not only in relation to the Parthenon marbles, but to works of myriad cultures worldwide – do you know of similar examples of art being repatriated? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8kkDRaIhUg&t=319s. https://youtu.be/J3MXPqYKKRM https://youtu.be/YE7DpRjDd-U
