EDU 234 PCC Ten Principles Based on a Philosophy of Respect Worksheet

Introduction:

The ten principles originated from the work of two pioneers in infant-toddler care and education; Emmi Pickler and Magda Gerber.  Pickler was a Hungarian pediatrician and researcher who got started in group care in 1946 following World War II creating an orphanage for children under the age of three.  Known as the Pikler Institute today, the program is still running under the direction of Dr. Pikler’s daughter, Anna Tardos.

Magda brought what she knew from the United States in 1956 and eventually started a program called Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE).  Although Pikler’s approach and Gerber’s philosophy are not identical, they are in tune with each other.
