Write a short essay–four pages–in which you identify a major theme that runs throughout this long poem. Once you have a written a thesis statement, within an introductory paragraph, exploring the significance of this theme in the poem, make sure that the following paragraphs of your essay contain several quotations from the poem that support your thesis.

Some themes to think about addressing are:

isolation

indecision

the alienation of modern life

alienation from women (for a man)

alienation from other men.

the passage of time

the wasting of time

the inability to approach or connect with the opposite sex (similar to the alienation themes above).
