UCLA Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Worksheet

We can all agree that the attached document is as dense as it is unpleasant, but this doesn’t mean that we can simply forgo delivering news that is dry or unpleasant.

For this activity, you are going to represent the CDC. You’ve just retrieved this document from a colleague who has informed you that he plans to publish it nationally. You, however, exercising good judgement and common sense, reply with “how about I help you to edit and revise this before moving forward?” Your next step is to review the text, then revamp and revise it based on a) what is discussed in your lecture notes, b) techniques that rely upon your own good judgement.

As a reader, let us assume that this information is relevant to you because of your line of work: How would this document make more sense to you? What could make it easier to understand, or less copious for you to read?

As a writer, what would you like your audience to know or to understand? Why should they care about this information and associated data? What can you do to avoid them becoming tired, bored, or uninterested in what you have to say?

Make sure to consider adding a logo, subheadings, graphics, etc. Your revised document should not sacrifice content, i.e. leave out any important information.

The finished product should be no more than one page in length (and I guarantee as difficult as this seems, you most certainly can get all of the content onto one single page, including graphics, without sacrificing content). Your grade will be based on how well and how thoroughly you’ve done this.

Please submit by the deadline below and be certain to sign up for your correct group before submitting. Also, be sure to bring a copy to class to discuss.
