Classmate I

Sproul’s 2019 article discussing biblical stewardship highlighted the key distinctions and points of intersection between the two words of “economics” and “stewardship”. Through discussing the words’ foundational roots, Sproul notably highlighted that “stewardship and economics are closely related concepts, and in fact, to a New Testament Christian, there was no distinction between them,” (Sproul, 2019, para. 3). This article guided readers into thinking deeply about connecting the Biblical practice of stewardship into today’s economic, and even political, issues. This is a critical connection for Christians- to not separate faith from the way economic/political issues are thought about and decided upon. A key grounding verse in this discussion can be found in 1 Corinthians 10:31 which says, “so, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God,” (English Standard Version, 2001/2006, 1 Corinth. 10:31). Thus, from this article, readers are led to expand where and how to apply the concept of biblical stewardship into everyday life. Areas such as daily spending habits, engagement with trending economic issues, and regular tithing practices may be areas one overlooks thinking deeply about how to apply stewardship. In summation, Sproul closes the article out by highlighting that, “fundamentally, stewardship is about exercising our God-given dominion over His creation, reflecting the image of our creator God in His care, responsibility, maintenance, protection, and beautification of His creation,” (Sproul, 2019, para. 15). In these ways, Sproul encourages readers to think more deeply into economic issues from a lens of biblical stewardship- all items I fully agree with.

Classmate II

I have applied the concepts of biblical stewardship in my life in many different ways. My parents have shown me how to tend to our land by growing flower gardens, vegetable gardens and an orchard. Just like the bible says, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28 NIV) As I was growing up, I would help my parents take care of the flower gardens by planting flowers and vegetable plants, weeding and mulching the gardens, and feeding and pruning the various plants. My parents also taught me how to reduce waste and how to find alternative uses for old items. This has become our way of life and we enjoy being creative in being able to repurpose older items with a new function. Our family has also learned how to raise our own chickens and take care of a variety of animals.

My parents have also demonstrated how to be a good steward of my money and not live frivolously. They have been teaching me how to invest my own money, the importance of being patient and to making wiser decisions. They have shown me, through their example, of how to be generous with our various resources in order to be a blessing to others. I believe these lessons also will help me in the world of business. I’ve learned to work hard and take responsibility for the tasks that have been entrusted to me. I have also learned from this course and other business classes that understanding finance is extremely critical to the success of any business. Though these course, I have learned just how essential it is to be diligent when calculating accounting statements. I have also learned how important accuracy and ethical behavior are, especially when dealing with accounting. I agree with all the points made in the excerpt and I especially found a few points very interesting. The concept that we should learn about the area in which we live and how we should care for it stood out to me. This encouraged me to study and learn about the different plants that grow here and around the world. There is such a vast numbers of species of plants, “According to the report titled ‘State of the World’s Plants’, released by researchers at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the United Kingdom, there are about 391,000 species of vascular plants currently known to science.” (How Many Plant Species Are There in the World? This is amazing to me and I believe it can be very fulfilling to learn about the different plants and animals that God has created as this helps us to become better stewards of His creations.
