American University of Armenia American Revolution Discussion response

Joan Hoff Wilson believed that the exploitation of working women/ housewife image was assisted by the American Revolution, however not caused by it. I do agree with her viewpoint on this matter, although that is not suggest that I believe women’s efforts weren’t crucial during the revolution. Due to the mindsets that dictated what women could and could not due in terms of functional opportunities were very limited between 1700 and 1800; henceforth did not allow women to change their status in the “newly emerging nation.” Due to women not taking part enough in issues that help create an individual’s status in society during this time such as land, taxes, politics, etc. to transition their lives in this new, pluralistic society. This resulted in there being no significant benefit for the American women. Due to the limitations set for women, the Great Awakening and the Enlightenment were limited in their affect for women; which made it “impossible” for even educated women to fully understand the blown-up speeches of the revolution era. They were taught by male leaders what the key terms such as “virtue, veracity, tyranny and corruption”. While there are women who are renowned today for their efforts such as Abigail Adams; there seems to be no evidence that there were many politically sophisticated (white) women at this time due to their restrictions, education and no change in political consciousness. This is not to take away their supported efforts throughout the revolution. Even for the educated women, their mindset to maintain the “proper sphere” could explain why they did not assemble to impose “more from the Founding Fathers.”

Due to the “counter revolution” which is seen as a conservative effort by colonialist to protect their system of slavery and profit. There is supposition that North American colonist were becoming fearful that London was moving towards abolition at a rapid rate, this fear stemmed from the Somerset vs. Stewart in 1772 It suggests that this was part of what prompted July 4, 1776.  It was thought that abolition would reach the colonies and therefore put at risk the slave trade, and all means that were dependent on slavery. Slavery was a huge part of those means’ profit since merchants who became quite powerful after the Glorious Revolution in 1688 and descended upon the African continent to take very many slaves due to there being no regulation. How, the revolution was also seen as a “counter revolution” since it brought about new conflicts regarding race. That those who were white in this newly founded society were given many rights, and those who were white were not. This notion goes hand-in-hand with my opinion of who benefited from the American Revolution which is white men with property.
