FLMMDA 110 Coraline Film Analytical Review

I’m working on a film writing question and need a sample draft to help me learn.

Respond to one of the following questions:

1. How does a specific animation technique in Coraline achieve or fail to achieve perceptual realism?; OR

2. What do you think of  Prince’s arguments about performance in animation with reference to Coraline?

A note on question 1 (discussed at the end of the 4A Lecture): In the first question you’re being asked to extend arguments made by Prince and Rodowick about perceptual realism (that are primarily about CGI), to Coraline, a film where the most important digital technologies behind the animation are not CGI (which is used, but not extensively). Rather, Coraline uses digital technologies of 3D printing for rapid prototyping in replacement animation. Although digital technologies of replacement animation are used in Coraline, the puppets are still animated practically (using stop-motion animation) in profilmic space in front of the camera. So while Prince and Rodowick were thinking about films like Jurassic Park that combine digital and practical visual effects, Coraline’s animation combines digital and practical animation in different ways. Given this, is their theory of perceptual realism still applicable to Coraline? Does Coraline achieve perceptual realism as they conceptualized it?
