Based on your reading of Violence: The Enduring Problem (Alvarez and Bachman) and Predators, Pedophiles, Rapists & Other Sex Offenders: Who They Are How They Operate and How We Can Protect Ourselves and Our Children (Salter), consider the notions of offender typologies and specific theories that help explain the violence portrayed in an offender of choice.

For your paper, you must choose one specific offender (sexual predator and/or violent offender) and analyze how the explanations found in Alverez & Bachman and Salter’s text help you to understand the offender and their crime(s) and (possible) criminal conviction. You are free to discuss offender profiles and offender motives using various theories and explanations (found in Alvarez & Bachman and Salter) as your foundation.

As part of your analysis, I would like to see you:

Use the overall theme in both texts of offender categorizations, how offenders function, criminal justice system interaction (including the motivation and the rationalization/justification the offender employed to defend their criminal act).

Support your conclusions or arguments with specific examples, properly cited in the text.

When describing the offender’s interaction with the Criminal Justice System (including the search, capture, and sentencing) explain why you do or DO NOT agree with their punishment.

Be detailed with what you think the system got wrong or right and, if needed, what you would suggest fixing.

If you want to include it, students can briefly cover victim protectionism in their paper.

ALL PAPERS MUST:

Have AT LEAST FOUR valid sources OTHER than our textbook, and any biographies, books, videos, and/or anything else shown or discussed in class or provided by me.

The paper MUST adhere to APA 7th Edition Style rules. We will discuss APA Style during the third week of class, and I am happy to provide students with examples and information on APA Style. Any other formatting styles are unacceptable.

Be properly cited throughout the entire paper both in format AND frequency.

Be typed, in Times New Roman 12-point font, double-spaced, stapled, include a cover page followed by the rubric and checklist after the reference page.

Stay on topic and give a clear and concise argument/analysis.
