The Term Paper: This is your final essay. I will be looking at all matters related to writing arguments. You need to have requested and or conducted research! You may choose your own topic, but it must be a different topic than the one used for your midterm essay. Be mindful when choosing topics that you are already passionate about as many students lose focus and are not objective due to their own preconceived bias. When choosing a topic, it may be safer to choose a topic on which you are already neutral. Keep in mind that could be difficult – being completely objective is not an easy task.

Term Paper Prompt: For this essay, you will identify a controversial topic and present both (two) sides of the controversy. You will state each side’s position in the terminology used in the textbook (i.e. claim, support, warrant) and find and discuss reasons why each side has difficulty convincing the other that they are wrong. This final determination will require analyzing and comparing the elements of each side’s argument. For example, you may find that the two sides do not actually have the same understanding of the issue (warrant). This is an evaluative essay with elements of a two-sided argumentative essay. The task of both evaluating and arguing the points of each perspective while remaining objective is difficult, but I believe you are up to the task!

NOTE: you will not argue for or against either side. This IS NOT a position paper. What you need to do it explain and analyze the arguments of each side. As a conclusion, you may offer a compromise or solution; this is the only part of the essay that may read like an opinion.

Requirements:

• The essay must display a clear understanding of the terminology used and the arguments used to defend positions.

Research is required.

In-text citations and a works cited page in MLA format must be included

six sources minimum. You can include a working bibliography page if your research extended past the sources you cited in the essay.

This essay will be eight to ten pages

Please begin to think about what you would like to write about for the Final Term Paper. You will need to get approval from me on your topic before you write it. This is done so that we can ensure that you have chosen a topic and stance that you will have enough information to research and write properly about. You will need to let me know by Tuesday July 6th. By planning your essay well in advance we can ensure that you will have a quality topic to write about which will better set you up for success.
