  • In my opinion, it is not proper for state and local governments to establish social practices that could violate federally protected civil rights. Social practices involve engagement with communities of interest by creating a practitioner community relationship where there remains a focus on the skills, knowledge, and understanding of people in their private, family, community, and working lives. I strongly believe this will divide citizens and cause more issues, disagreements and or arguments, due to the fact that every state has it’s own beliefs and values. Civil rights are personal rights guaranteed and protected by the U.S. constitution and federal laws enacted by congress, such as the civil rights act of 1964 and the Americans with disabilities act of 1990. Civil rights include protection from unlawful discrimination. The HHS office for civil rights enforces civil rights laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, and, in some cases, religion. Chapter 1 states, historical memory plays an important role in political culture – the broadly shared values, beliefs, and attitudes about how the government should function and politics should operate, which can serve as a link between citizens and the government. Which I completely agree with but not all citizens agree with the same topic, there will always be a debate. For instance chapter 1 also states “The myth of the confederacy and Texas’s place in it distorted the past and caused harm in the present.” Which lead to new monuments to be erected also confederate symbols and monuments to be removed in Texas.
