Dyersburg State Community College Duck and Cover Discussion

The Cold War was an unusual time in America, with Communist hysteria spreading like wildfire through the nation. On top of this was the fear of nuclear weapons added to the mix. One of the interesting developments of the 50s, was the genre of disaster and mutant monster films which could be directly related to the people’s fears of the Cold War. While there are fewer of the exact type produced at this time, movies of this same type are still being produced today in the form of alien invasion or natural disasters.

Much like the safety films shown in schools today, there were also special films produced for and shown to children across the nation in an attempt to calm their fears and answer questions. The link immediately above, in this week’s Content, is for a film produced in conjunction with the National Education Association (NEA). This is affectionately known today as either Bert the Turtle or Duck and Cover, and was produced to provide concrete information to children, the film’s primary target audience.

Please watch watch the film provided with this week’s course content, and and then develop a discussion post that answers the following questions:

  • Why was the film created?
  • What was its purpose? Do you think it was successful?
  • Is it similar to anything you have viewed before or were taught in school? If so, what?
  • What did you find about the culture of the time that was different?
