Meridian Community College English Poems and Technology Essay

In the interaction with the poems “Hymn of Acxiom” and “Touchscreen,” we have encountered questions regarding knowing and being known and how deeply we want outsiders to know us–especially through our technology. Spend a minimum of 400 words reflecting in essay format on one or all of the following ideas surrounding these poems:

  • Our internal conflict between wanting (dare I say needing) technology and the invasion of privacy that it can be–what are we laying at the altar of technology and why?
  • Our creating of an existential identity that exists outside of ourselves through avatars, memojis, etc.–why do we create these? Are they different than our actual personalities? Why?
  • The idea that “every piece of technology provides a tradeoff”–what are we trading for the use of technology and why? Are we sacrificing actual human connection for virtual connectivity? How is this helpful or harmful or both?
