Temple University Film Persepolis Foreign Enemy Analysis

This assignment asks you to prepare, create, and post a short VoiceThread video (2-4 minutes) responding to the following prompt:

1) , we explored THEME 3: How regimes establish themselves and assert their power: they seek to identify and demonize a foreign enemy (an “other”). During the Iran-Iraq War, Iraq was the obvious foreign enemy; and we saw how the Iranian regime used nationalist sentiment against Iraq to get its people to support the war, despite the devastation the war was causing in their lives. In addition, we saw how the Iranian regime used the pretext of this foreign war to crush internal opposition to its rule: Iranians who politically opposed the government were identified as an “enemy within” and were systematically arrested and executed. .Taking into account and referring to this analysis, choose a moment or an episode in the text pertaining to the Iran-Iraq War, and explain why Satrapi’s account of this moment or episode resonates with you.

2) we explored THEME 4: The ways in which leaving one’s country and living abroad enables one to interrogate and understand aspects of oneself and one’s society from an entirely different perspective. We saw how, during her four years of high school education in Austria, Marji was persistently treated as a “foreigner,” facing frequent insults and social isolation. We also saw how, through this painful experience, she ultimately grew to embrace and own her Iranian cultural identity.

Taking into account and referring to this analysis, choose a moment or an episode in the text pertaining to Marji’s Austrian experience, and explain why Satrapi’s account of this moment or episode resonates with you.

For both responses, you should feel completely free to choose any relevant moment/episode that you would liketo discuss (regardless of whether or not it was discussed in the video presentations).
