Capella University Interview with A Leader of A Health Care Organization Summary

Develop a 3-5 page summary of an interview with a leader of a health care organization or a health care professional with specific expertise related to the population and health care need you identified in the first assessment. Summarize their approach to improving the quality of care and outcomes for the population and health care need.

Introduction

It is crucial for health educators to exemplify how health practitioners in general are supposed to communicate with different clients, demonstrating how to interact with racially and ethnically diverse populations in order to provide them with adequate health information to make decisions concerning their health and health care. As a provider, you must continually advocate for effective cross-cultural communication and remember to focus on the important elements of communication, cultural sensitivity, marketing techniques, and language barriers as you carry out your role and function in various environments (Pérez & Luquis, 2014).

Another needed skill of health care professionals is the ability to understand and synthesize standards of care, best practices, and regulations into personal and organizational practices. The ability to synthesize the legal requirements of care with the on-the-ground realities of care is an essential skill for all health care practitioners.

In all professional fields, it is important to learn from those who have experience working at various levels of their fields. Often you can learn things from conversations with people in the field that cannot be learned through study. This is especially true when it comes to complex fields, like health care. When looking at identifying and deepening your understanding of the health care needs and various populations that a health care organization serves, it is very valuable to speak with the professionals who work in the communities. By combining on-the-ground experiences of professionals with the information that health care data provides, better plans and courses of action can be developed.

Additionally, by seeing what leaders in the field are doing, the master’s-prepared nurse can work on building a foundation of best practices. When best practices are applied, health care professionals and organizations can ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards of care.

Preparation

As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as part of your assessment.

This assessment will be based interviewing a health care professional about the methods that their organization uses to communicate with patients and communities about health promotion and education, as well as how the organization implements practices that align to the National CLAS Standards. Think about experiences you may have had working in communities to provide health education or promotion services and working to align care practices to specific guidelines and standards.

  • From what organization do you plan to interview a health care professional?
    • Who within the organization do you plan to interview?
  • Why does communication between health care providers and communities and patients matter?
    • What are some strategies for communicating with diverse populations?
      • How can you help ensure that communication between providers and patients is effective?
  • Thinking of the health care need you identified in the first assessment, which populations affected by the health care need might need accommodations or considerations?
    • What accommodations or considerations are most appropriate for the populations you have identified?
    • How could you help to ensure that your organization is offering these accommodations?
  • How do the National CLAS Standards relate to your identified health care need and populations?
    • What strategies could be used to help an organization align care approaches to the National CLAS Standards?
    • How could an organization leverage the National CLAS Standards to ensure effective communication with diverse populations?
    • In general, what do you see as the organization’s strengths and challenges related to addressing the National CLAS Standards?

Scenario

Now that your project team has identified a health care need in the community that is of critical importance to address, as well as the populations or groups that are most impacted, the project team has been asked to seek out leaders and experts in the health care field to interview. The purpose of the interview is to gather an overview of the various approaches and best practices that are currently in use for improving the quality of care and outcomes related to the health care need and populations for the project.

Instructions

For your part, you will conduct an interview with a health care administrator or selected health care professional regarding their organization’s approach to the health care need and the highly impacted subgroups you identified in Assessment 1: Identifying Community Health Needs. The focus of your questions should be on how the professional’s health care institution or organization is addressing the concerns of the identified health care need and impacted subgroups relative to the National CLAS Standards.

As you gather information, you will want to make sure you are getting both a big-picture view of how the organization is culturally and linguistically adept and also how it is addressing the subgroups of the population that have a higher prevalence of the identified health issue. Carrying through with our example from the first assessment, if you had identified that heart disease was an issue for your community or state, you might ask questions such as:

  • What methods does your organization use to ensure that communications between the health care providers and patients are effective for a diverse population?
  • What kind of accommodations or considerations does your organization provide for the elderly population?
  • How does your organization balance preventative health promotion and education approaches in the community with time-of-care strategies to improve health care quality and outcomes?

For this assessment, you will develop a concise but comprehensive summary of your interview and the approach of the organization to improving the quality of care and outcomes for the population and health care need. Be sure you are including references to the National CLAS Standards in your report. The bullet points below correspond to the grading criteria in the scoring guide. Be sure that your submission addresses all of them. You may also want to read the Interview of Health Care Professional Scoring Guide to better understand how each grading criterion will be assessed.

  • Explain strategies the selected health care organization has implemented to address the identified health care need, aligning the strategies to the National CLAS Standards.
  • Explain the benefits of a health care organization meeting the National CLAS Standards to address the identified health care need of the diverse population of the community or state.
  • Identify the strengths of the organization in addressing the National CLAS Standards with regard to clinical prevention, population health, and health disparities in diverse and vulnerable populations.
  • Identify the challenges of the organization in addressing the National CLAS Standards with regard to clinical prevention, population health, and health disparities in diverse and vulnerable populations.
  • Communicate an organization’s strategies, strengths, and weaknesses to addressing specific health needs of diverse population in a clear and well organized manner.
  • Integrate relevant sources to support assertions, correctly formatting citations and references using current APA style.
