Language and Culture Story Presentation

 

Overview:

we have examined issues of language, culture, and education, within various sociocultural, socio historical, and sociopolitical contexts. We have read research articles and stories that narrate the linguistic, cultural, and educational experiences of students, families, educators communities. Now it is your turn to collect, document, and share someone’s language and culture story.

The Interview:

1. Collect and document a language and culture story from a family member, friend, colleague, etc.

2. Use StoryCorps as a model to interview your participant, and to shape your final story.

3. Include questions that tell the language and culture story of your participant. Be sure to ask questions that address the following:

  • Linguistic and cultural background information on your part participant.
  • How does your participant’s linguistic and cultural background inform their beliefs about the connection between language, culture, and education?
  • How does your participant’s linguistic and cultural background shape their identity, sense of self, status, etc.?
  • What advice would your participant give future teachers to provide equitable opportunities 

    to learn for students from all backgrounds?

The Outcome:

  1. The resulting artifact should clearly tell your participant’s language and culture story.
  2. The resulting artifact should clearly address the questions above (#3).
  3. The artifact can be in any media format of your choice.
