NUTR 11 Fad Diet Summary Question
Directions
In this project, you demonstrate several learning objectives for our NUTR 11 course:
- Evaluate the reliability of nutritional information from a variety of sources.
- Research reliable resources in nutrition.
- Critique popular literature in the field of food and nutrition and determine its accuracy.
- Research and describe diet trends and describe their side effects.
Just a reminder that for this project you will:
- Decide what Fad Diet you want to research. (If you have not yet decided, the Fad Diets Through the Years website or the Food Fads Through the Ages infographic will give you some ideas.)
- Find at least 3 articles from the PCC Nutrition LibGuide or the PubMed database (Links to an external site.) about your topic. At least one of these articles must be from a scholarly peer-reviewed journal. (Tip: You may have already found one for your assignment the first week of class!)
- (a) Summarize the “Fad Diet” article using the rubric prompts below; then, (b) compare & contrast the Fad Diet promises with the scientific research articles you found (please look at the rubric prompts below), and (c) provide a science-based conclusion statement.
- Individually create a 2-3 page typed ‘Fact Sheet‘ about your topic (with appropriate references) that you will then share with the rest of the class. This ‘Fact Sheet’ will include the following:
- The main points from your research.
- The impact this information has/can have on a person’s health or diet. (Did this information make you want to change your diet in any way? Why? Why not? Could this diet possibly make you sick)?
- Where to go for additional information about this diet.
- A 3-5 paragraph summary assessing the benefits/drawbacks of this diet.
- Please do NOT forget to use at least three different credible scientific references when you evaluate your chosen ‘fad diet’, including at least 1 article from a peer-reviewed journal! I want to see that you use nutrition science in your evaluation (and preferably articles published in peer-reviewed journals as your references; as before, I will provide bonus points to those of you who use and properly cite & reference more than 1 peer-reviewed journal article in your work)!
To see examples of science-based Fact Sheets (= a listing of facts supported by credible scientific evidence, including at least 1 peer-reviewed article plus other credible science sources) please look at:
- the CDC’s Sodium_Fact_Sheet.pdf (Links to an external site.)(this factsheet uses AMA citation format; you are welcome to use AMA for your factsheet or use APA), and
- the WHO’s Healthy Diet_Factsheet394.pdf(this factsheet also uses a numeric citation format; you are welcome to use it for your factsheet or use APA)
-I will tip you based on the accuracy of the project and the amount of effect that was put in it
