Hudson County Community College Gero Crucifix Discussion Response

1-The Gero Crucifix develops how artists had developed in displaying biblical subjects via sculptural representations. I find this sculpture very captivating via its representation of a suffering Christ “on the cross”. The sculpture is epic in size, standing about six feet, a huge piece that makes one feel the passions of the new tortured Christ theme. The art is established with a figure with lifeless limbs and a drooping head instituting feelings of pity and mourning. Christ’s sorrow for the sins of humans as he perishes on the cross is displayed in the sculpture. Christ’s muscular structure is abstracted and distorted, permitting a helpless and weak image. Christ is shrouded in drapery that is gold detailed, the most life-packedsculpture part. Moreover, the depiction shows Christ dressed in a gem-decorated cruciform halo to offer him respect and prompt his holy meaning. This is a greatly influential piece and successfullystates the message of sympathyintended by the artiste.

2-One piece of art that stood out to me was the Symbol of St. Matthew, from the Book of Durrow. Irish monasteries had to hand-write vast quantities of copies of the Bible and other Christian writings in order to promote the Gospel message about Christ, the Kingdom of God, and redemption. The Book of Durrow’s image of St. Matthew’s symbol demonstrates how ornamental pattern may animate a figure while also emphasizing its surface embellishment. The figure’s body, which is made up of framed checkerboard pieces, is reminiscent of the Sutton Hoo clasps in terms of aesthetic quality. The addition of a direct-facing head and side-facing feet transforms the ornamental patterns into a human figure. This was done purposely to convey the importance of St. Matthew, Beyond the reason why it was created I also find it intriguing that artist carried on elaborate patterns that would normally be seen in metalworks to a Bible.
